If there is one thing that the Aviva Premiership could take from the Top 14 it’s the way the French do match day. They promote every match as a big occasion. Of course, getting a victory is crucial, but outside of that the


clubs in the Top 14 ensure the match is a good day out for all their supporters. This includes everything from the BBQs and events going on away from the pitch to the atmosphere in the bars, long before and long after the match itself. The French clubs pioneered the ‘Big Game’ concept with Stade


Français taking games to the Stade de France, and Biarritz and Perpignan going over the border for games in Spain. Clubs try to put on a fantastic event every week so season-ticket holders feel they’re getting fantastic value for money. This leads to fans buying into the clubs and their objectives more. Also, Super League have done a great job of playing


summer rugby and, although there is a lot of weight behind keeping rugby as a winter sport in England, I think it’s something to look at in the future.
