It takes ambition to become one. “You have to be willing to think a little bigger than a bedside nurse does and develop physiology and pharmacology skills,” she said. “You’ve got to want to learn,

Bratina does rounds daily at the Indianapolis hospital, though she doesn’t see patients in a clinical role unless a nurse comes to her for help. Bratina isn’t fazed by the fact that about 75 percent of her current job is administrative, which includes counseling and human resource functions. She acknowledges that she didn’t know what she wanted to do when she enrolled in graduate school at the University of Indianapolis. “You just go for it, and God tells you
where to go,” Bratina said — without a hint of regret. Getting respect from other medical
professionals is a challenge most nurse practitioners face. “There’s competition between all levels of health care,” she noted. “But the harsh reality is, we need all the help we can get to provide healthy, safe care for patients.” ●
