WAS INTRIGUED by a recent cable television show about the scientific exploration of Europa, the sixth moon of Jupiter. The moon was first discovered in
1610 by Galileo and named after a Phoenician noblewoman. Europa is approximately the size of our own moon and is comprised mostly of sili- cate rock with a probable iron core. What is of interest to contemporary scientists about Europa is that is has an atmosphere composed primarily of oxygen, and it is hypothesized that beneath its surface of ice is an ocean of water that could very well support extraterrestrial marine life. Even though Galileo’s discovery was made with the use of a simple 20-
power scope, the science used to support those modern conclusions is state-of-the-art and involved the Galileo namesake space probe. The concept of extrater- restrial water and marine life got me thinking about fish right here on planet earth and how far the recreational fishing industry has come in its own right with the use of cutting-edge technology. If there is in fact water on Europa, and by some miracle of evolution, fish, my bet is that today’s hi-tech artificial baits would indeed catch them. And if they can do that just think about the possibilities
