EDITOR’S LETTER

OPENING SHOTS

Welcome to the May issue of ActivInstinct magazine.

We are particularly excited about this issue, because not only do we have exclusive interviews with tennis world number ones Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki, but last month we also became one of the very first media outlets in the world to interview a British athlete after setting a new world record, triathlete Chrissie Wellington.

Many congratulations to Chrissie, who opened her 2011 campaign by breaking her own women’s Ironman world record. Last month Wellington completed the Ironman South Africa in 8:33.56 – knocking 2.17 off her previous record. Having swum and cycled for over five and a half hours, it is staggering that Wellington found the stamina to run a marathon in 2:52.54.

Chrissie is an inspirational figurehead for a sport that is growing fast (the number of registered triathletes in England and Wales has risen by over 15% for the 2010/11 season, to a total of over 14,000 members). With less than 500 days to go now until the 2012 Olympics in London, I hope Great Britain’s aspiring Olympians and club athletes alike can follow Chrissie’s lead and find the strength to raise their performance to a new level over the coming months. We hope you enjoy our exclusive interview with Chrissie.

We interviewed Rafael Nadal soon after he had won the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters for a remarkable seventh successive year, and our time with the world’s best tennis player is a privilege for which we are very grateful to Babolat, Nadal’s racket company of choice.

Robin Barwick

On current form, it is hard to see anyone beating Nadal on any surface, let alone clay, and since winning in Monte-Carlo – and just before our May issue was published – the Spaniard continued his all-conquering dominance in the Barcelona Open at the end of April. As in Monte-Carlo, Nadal defeated his countryman David Ferrer in the final, and Ferrer must be sick of the sight of his great rival – Nadal also defeated Ferrer in the Barcelona finals of 2008 and 2009.

This was Nadal’s sixth triumph in Barcelona in seven years, and he has become the first player in the Open era to win two tournaments at least six times. He is a true great.

The new domestic cricket season also comes under the spotlight in this issue, and we have exclusive interviews with two of England’s finest batsmen of recent times, Marcus Trescothick and Jonathan Trott. Having spent the winter battling valiantly abroad, the England players must be delighted to be actually spending some time at home! With World Cup finalists Sri Lanka and India touring this summer though, any respite will be short-lived.

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the sudden death of Peter Moss last week. Peter’s wit and adventurous spirit made him the perfect travel writer for our magazine. He will be missed enormously, and our thoughts are with Peter’s family and loved ones.
