HEAD TO HEAD
Jonathan Trott has established himself as a potent force at the sharp end of the English batting line up in both Tests and ODI’s. Scoring runs consistently and playing a pivotal role in the English batting line up has resulted in Jonathan earning himself the coveted title of Wisden Cricketer of the year for 2011. He spoke exclusively to Activinstinct’s Carl Leo.
You’ve just returned from a mammoth tour. How do you stay focussed on the job and avoid both mental and physical fatigue on such a long tour?
It’s all about training properly. There’ll be a high quantity of training at the beginning of the tour, tapering off toward the end as you’ve laid the foundation that allows you to train well for an hour with a bigger focus on quality. You don’t spend unnecessary time in the gym or in the nets and make you sure you get enough rest. This is especially true in the Sub Continent where it’s so hot that being physically prepared is as important as it is to practice technique in the nets. If you’re over trained you’re not going to be very successful.

Do you train as much on Tour as you do when you play at home?
It depends on how many days you have between games. If you’re playing ODI’s and they’re back to back you’d have a light training session in between; if you’re playing in a tournament like the World Cup where we had up to a week in between games, you’d have a bit more time to be specific with your training and prepare in a way that’s geared toward your next opponent.
What would you say is the most demanding part of being an International Cricketer?
The most demanding aspect is the travel. This winter we counted 40 flights over a 5 month period which is quite a bit!
The travel is something that’s quite new for me; last winter we travelled South Africa where they only play cricket in a few places, whereas in India they seem to find a place to play in every city! It’s difficult to be away from home if you have a young family but it’s something that comes with the territory.
Having been involved in the England Ashes Victory down under you must have some incredible memories, talk us through some of your personal highlights of the tour.
The way we won as a team was a highlight with the two perfect team victories in Adelaide and Melbourne standing out. If you wanted to make a blueprint on how to win a game those
