HEAD TO HEAD

Wimbledon

is a sacred place for all tennis players and everyone’s dream is to win there

Which Yonex racket are you playing with at the moment, and what do you like about it?

I’m playing with the VCore and I absolutely love it. It gives the ball a lot of spin, and the ball goes faster from it than my previous racket. It’s obvi- ously crucial for a player to like their racket if they are to play to their very best.

At the Qatar Open you showed your support for Liverpool FC by wearing a Liverpool shirt during a warm-up on court. What drew to you to become a Liverpool fan?

I’ve been a Liverpool fan since forever, I think. I’m a huge fan of Fernando Torres - I actually have a dedicated jersey from him – so I was sorry when he went to Chelsea. I’ve been to the stadium once before but I can’t wait to go back again. My father and brother are both soccer players, so I think the love for football runs in my blood.

While Wozniacki has yet to claim her first Grand Slam title, her career results in the tennis ‘majors’ show a progression that suggests a breakthrough might not be far away. She has progressed to the 4th round or better of every Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2009, and she has reached the last eight or better in four of the last six Grand Slams.

In 2009, Wozniacki made it to the final of the US Open, becoming the first Danish player, male or female, to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era (she had already become the first Dane to win on the WTA, in Stockholm in 2008). Wozniacki was defeated by Belgium’s Kim Clijsters in the US Open final by a score of 7-5, 6-3.

Wozniacki’s win in Charleston in April 2011 was her third title of the season already, and bodes well for the French Open, which like Charleston, is played on clay courts. Number-one seed Wozni- acki got past some hardened competitors in Charleston, includ- ing 6th seed Yanina Wickmayer in the quarterfinals, 3rd seed Jelena Jankovic in the semi-finals, before defeating unseeded Russian Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-3 in the final.
