For Amanda Clemente, who spent her secondment at Broadway Maylan, it has been an invaluable experience in developing her understanding of the architectural world. ‘This experience has given me a great
insight into the work and culture of an architectural practice. I have certainly learnt a lot over the duration of my secondment, which I have no doubt will be of great value to me as I progress with my career in the built environment.’ Clemente, a building services mechanical engineer by training at Hoare Lea, was tasked with designing a three-bedroom eco family home for a lock keeper. To do this she fi rst had to complete a number of exercises, which started with a site visit. ‘This was a totally new experience for
me,’ enthuses Clemente. ‘I had never had to approach a site at such an early stage and evaluate parameters such as sun paths and density of vegetation in my line of work.’ She then spent time conducting a
precedent study, and found herself drawn to a certain style, which was very modern, using simple lines, large areas of glazing with a mixture of timber cladding and
