his past week I was invited to join a panel of Monroe County media and news professionals to speak before Leadership Monroe County. Tis Keys-wide group of professionals is selected above many applicants to learn the inner workings of our city, county and state governments. Te program is designed to cultivate and educate,

so these individuals may one day become part of our community leadership and maybe even a member of our governing body. Where do you choose to read the news? Te panelists were asked to speak about their experiences and answer

questions from the Leadership attendees. Te marketing panelists spoke of the growing importance of social media within government and business. Te news panelists spoke of their duties to fairly deliver locally produced and balanced news stories. I represented KONK Broadcasting. KONK is different than most news organizations since our news stories are mainly interviews with our leading newsmakers. Our news content is portrayed in their words and from their perspective. Not all of the county publications were invited to present and answer

questions. One county publication is a pictorial of pages of local personalities and events with very little news. Another local newspaper primarily delivers the most outrageous commentaries and opinions while claiming it is news. Usually after a paragraph or two, you read one of the most frequently used phrases in this publication, “I don’t make this up,” while attempting to insinuate that if it sounds crazy, it must be true. No matter how many times this newspaper writes a lead story about our police department and our government it repeats the same words, always implying this is true, this is true. Sadly, it must have learned from our national politically scene — repeat the same story over and over again until it appears true, no matter how false the actuations are. Is it true and interesting to read? Does it answer the most pressing questions? All publications, news or otherwise, described that print media develops a

following of readers based on delivery and the written style of the news, let it be written in-house or from outside sources. KONK stories are interview based, so our delivery and coverage is quite different from other local publications. Is it right? Or better? Tat will be answered by our audience and readership. As a reader myself, I enjoy reading a good story where the writer completes what I call a full circle. Te story covers the important details of the subject matter while entertaining me and holding my attention to the end. I am happy to report our community has several local news journalists that do that day in and day out. To you I tip my hat. I know full well how difficult it is to write on demand. You, too, may have your favorites as well, and with good grace, you may say you find them here occasionally on the pages of KONK Life. lGuy deBoer/publisher
