University develops

advanced integrated access management system

Grosvenor Technology’s JANUS access control system is at the heart of an advanced integrated smart card system at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). Over the last 10 years the university has deployed the JANUS system for their campus-wide access control and has developed it into one of the most sophisticated integrated access and student management systems in the education sector. The system typically has 45,000 smart cards programmed for students, staff and visitors allowing controlled entry to over 300 access points around campus.

“The JANUS system is a robust, flexible and open architecture solution that has allowed us to develop an integrated approach to access control,” said Nigel Smith, NTU’s Resources Manager. “Not only does it interface with hardware such as the fire alarm system; automatically opening doors in the event of a fire, but also interfaces to other software applications, through the JANUS Enterprise software.”

The open database structure of JANUS Enterprise has allowed the university to streamline its student enrolment and smart card production process. When a student

is first enrolled, the open structure of JANUS Enterprise automatically allows the creation of an access control profile for the student based on their

course code, discipline and year of study. This ensures that the student can only gain access to the appropriate campus buildings and facilities. The contact-less MIFARE smart cards are also used for cash-less vending, photocopying, printing, sports membership, car parks, library book loans and as a Student Union card. They can also be used for unlimited transport on Nottingham’s bus and tram network. This integrated approach allows the university to efficiently manage large numbers of students that change on a regular basis. The university uses real time analytics within JANUS to automatically manage its car parks. The system maintains an accurate count of the number of vehicles currently in each car park, enabling large car park entrance displays to show if spaces are available and restricting entry when full.

The reporting tools allow the university to establish whether a student has recently accessed the university in the event of an emergency or if a student

welfare issue arises. Building and room occupancy can also be quickly checked for security or health & safety reasons. The JANUS system is a distributed fault-tolerant solution based around its Intelligent Door Controller (IDC). Each IDC is a robust standalone unit that can control two doors/locks and interface to a wide range of industry standard card readers and lock mechanisms. Each IDC is networked to the JANUS Server either via serial communications or an IP network. Every card profile associated with an IDC is downloaded to the controller to ensure continued operation even in the event of a network or power failure. Each new IDC design maintains backwards compatibility with older units, which has provided NTU with a continued expansion path always making the latest technologies available, whilst maintaining complete compatibility with the existing JANUS hardware installed over the last 10 years. New technology and partnering program launch

ASSA ABLOY will be showcasing a range of industry-leading technology-based security and access control solutions at IFSEC 2011, as well as launching an exciting new Aperio partnering program. Visitors to Stand C50 in Hall 4 will be able to discover more about ASSA ABLOY’s Aperio enabling technology and new Aperio partnering program, designed to support business growth for access control specialists.

Aperio uses smart technology to enable the wireless integration of mechanical locks into existing access control systems with minimal door modification, allowing easy and cost effective expansion of existing locking systems within refurbished or remodeled public and commercial buildings. IFSEC visitors will be able to experience Aperio’s ease of installation for themselves by entering the on-stand competition, where the fastest person to change a traditional cylinder to an Aperio cylinder will win an iPad.

ASSA ABLOY will also be launching Building & Facilities Management – April 2011

Cliq Remote; an internet-based security management system that allows programming of cylinders and keys to provide remote access control across disparate sites requiring high levels of security.

Other innovations on display will include ASSA ABLOY’s HiO (Highly Intelligent Opening) technology for electronic door components, in conjunction with Trimec electric strikes. This future-proof system provides advanced diagnostic information by building intelligence into each device. Now available in the UK from ASSA ABLOY, a range of Trimec

electromechanical locking solutions will be on display, including the new ES2100 monitored strike. The ES9000, ES6000 and ES110 electric strikes will also be on show, alongside the Vlock motorized bolt and TB25 and TB38 drop bolts. New for the residential market, Yale Keyfree will also be exhibited at IFSEC. The UK’s first ever digital door lock for

residential doors, Yale Keyfree allows users to access and secure their home using a personalised PIN code or remote control fob, with no need for a traditional key.

ASSA ABLOY will also be showcasing its Codehandle – a sleek lever handle that features an integral five-button keypad, which provides a simple, cost-effective way to restrict access to private areas of light commercial and residential buildings. Plus, visitors to the stand will be able to view the new range of CE marked door closers from ASSA ABLOY, including two cam motion models that will assist building owners in meeting Equality Act guidelines. A rack and pinion variant is also available with the same installation footprint, allowing for greater flexibility.

Finally, ASSA ABLOY will be displaying a range of high security steel doors from the ASSA ABLOY Security Doors division, alongside Cliq Protec technology, a hybrid electromechanical locking solution; and a selection of electric strikes from Abloy, including the new 466 and 566 locks.
