issues such as harmonics and transients, therefore allowing for greater efficiency and savings.

Powerstar optimises the voltage as it is being reduced. The system is installed in series with the mains electricity supply to give an optimum supply voltage for the site's equipment. It improves power quality by balancing phase voltages and filtering harmonics and transients from the electricity supply. As such it is the most efficient system available and can save up to 26.1% of your electricity bill. Powerstar is a uniquely designed voltage optimisation system that also gives the end-user the ability to optimise their supply locally, correcting power quality problems from the grid, and is designed to do so very efficiently enabling total energy savings of up to 26.1%. Powerstar has extremely high efficiencies, up to 99.91% at maximum load. Each Powerstar system is custom wound to the exact requirements of each site and therefore offers unrivalled efficiency and savings. As a result of continual growth and success, Powerstar has become the energy management system of choice for blue chip companies, government departments, organisations with critical services and many other companies of all sizes that form its ever- expanding client base.

Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets Council in London is committed to sustainable development and is continuously improving its services, policies and practices to contribute to a better quality of life for its inhabitants. The Council commissioned Powerstar to survey its facilities at Albert Jacob House – the offices for its Homeless and Housing Advices Services – to determine the effectiveness of voltage optimisation on the site.

Based in the East End of London, Tower Hamlets is one of the five host boroughs for the 2012 London Olympic Games. The Council has an environmental strategy and is undertaking a number of initiatives to reduce its energy consumption and to lower carbon emissions. Its vision is to become a council with progressively lower environmental impacts and which sets an excellent example of leadership in environmental good practice to the community.

Following an onsite survey by Powerstar at the Council’s Albert Jacob facility and an analysis of their Half Hour Data and electricity bills the annual electricity consumption at the site was determined to be 540,745kWh. The largest consumption areas were found to

be the switch start lighting, air handling units, air conditioning (small VSD), pumps, IT (with UPS) and lift motors. Powerstar were challenged to demonstrate the level of savings in

electricity costs and carbon emissions that voltage optimisation could achieve for the Council at this site. Powerstar

identified that a minimum saving of

12% in electricity consumption could be achieved through voltage optimisation and as a result a 226KvA Powerstar unit was recommended and subsequently installed at Albert Jacob House. An annual saving in electricity consumption of 54,065kWh will be achieved following the installation of the Powerstar voltage optimisation unit. This equates to a saving of £6,411 on the annual electricity charges. Carbon emissions will also be reduced by 30 tonnes per annum.

Tower Hamlets council energy manager Sian Pipe said: “Installing the Powerstar will support the Asset Management drive to reduce carbon and energy consumption in Tower Hamlets, always striving to be lean, flexible and green.”

Guoman Hotel Management (UK) Ltd Guoman Hotel Management (UK) Ltd manages an exclusive collection of hotels in London, including the Thistle group, and has plans to expand its luxury developments overseas. Hotels are high users of energy and are looking for practical ways to lessen their impact on the environment, it was a key priority for the company to reduce energy costs and in turn the hotels’ carbon footprint. In October 2008, head of property David Hannah established a process to identify the right source of expertise to help him fulfil his obligations at Guoman Hotel Management (UK) Ltd. Following calls to specialist contractors for their input and detailed research the name Powerstar came to the fore. Following discussions and onsite surveys the decision was taken to commission Powerstar to provide a solution to the more efficient use of incoming energy at several of the company’s hotels. Savings in the total electricity consumption from the Guoman hotel installations have hit an amazing 26.1% at the Thistle Hyde Park Hotel. Elsewhere,

savings have never been less than 11.5%. In addition to reducing the cost of energy bills, Powerstar has also enabled the company to achieve significantly lower CO2

emissions and

help to lessen the impact on the environment. Machinery is also running at the voltage it is designed to operate at leading to more efficient use, less need for maintenance and an expectation that it will last for longer before needed to be replaced.

“In commercial terms

Powerstar came up with pretty well the ideal solution. They struck just the right balance between finding a means of installing a fail safe system that would significantly reduce our energy bills while achieving the hurdle rates for capital investment. From the outset, the Powerstar team was pro-active, commercially aware and able to demonstrate a high level of competence in both analysing our technical & subsequent installation requirements within a live hotel requirement. They promised technical support, professionalism and minimum fuss and that was precisely what they delivered! We were more than confident that the calculated savings in terms of energy consumption were realistic however, we are delighted to learn that the savings have in some cases exceeded our expectations.” David Hannah, head of property, Guoman Hotel Management (UK) Ltd.

In short, if you do not currently have voltage optimisation installed within your organisation, it is highly likely that you are wasting money, and that your impact on the environment is greater than it needs to be. Voltage optimisation is not the only solution to spiralling energy costs – but it should certainly be considered as an integral part of your overall energy management strategy. www.powerstar.co.uk
