climbingcentre.com) is one of the largest indoor walls in Europe. Its beginners climbing course runs over three weeks with three two-hour sessions and costs £90. A one-hour, one-to-one taster session costs £30.

www.beaconclimbing.com) is a great place to learn the basics before progressing outdoors. Introductory courses cover four two-hour evening sessions or two four-hour sessions at the weekend and cost £55. One and a half-hour taster sessions cost £55 for one to three people.

rockandice.net) offers courses in a variety of areas including the Peak District, Lake District, Scotland and North Wales. It runs introductory two-day courses for beginners and two to five day intermediate courses for those with a bit of experience under their harness. Both courses start from £130 and include all tuition and equipment.

www.bowles.ac) is based on the Kent/Sussex border where there’s a natural sandstone outcrop ideal for novice climbers to learn the ropes. It runs one-day beginner courses and one-day Moving Outside courses for those who have some indoor experience – both courses cost £55 and include all tuition and equipment.
Plas y brenInwaLeS Based in the heart of Snowdonia, North Wales, Plas y Brenin (01690 720214;
www.pyb.co.uk) has access to some of the finest climbing routes in Britain. Its Discover Rock Climbing two-day course for beginners costs £295, while its two-day Moving Out course for those with some indoor experience costs £225. Courses include two-nights’ full-board accommodation and all tuition and equipment.
