Lauren Weingart. Junior Alyssa Sceppagurcio played in just 17 games last season, but started 24 games as a freshman and could fill the void up the middle opposite Jones. Meanwhile, freshman Samantha Ray, a three- tool slap hitter who can play various positions around the infield, could step in and produce at the hot corner.
Senior Sara Gallacchi could also see plenty of time around the infield, as her versatility and skills as a utility player will providemuch-needed depth. Her top-notch defensive skills give the Saints someone they canmove around the field, and she could even see some time in the outfield.
Outfielders The pitching staff’s loss was the outfield’s gain last season, as Mandy Ferro had a fine freshman season despite not being able to pitch many innings for the Saints. She hit .323 and led the team with 27 runs scored and nine stolen bases. Her speed was also an asset defensively, as she committed just two errors all season long. Ideally, she’ll see more time in the circle, but when she isn’t pitching, the sophomore will have no trouble contributing elsewhere on the field.
Fellow pitcher Courtney Brinkman also established herself as a reliable outfielder when not in the circle, starting 37 games in 2010. Those two will likely be joined by junior Lindsey McKeever, a mainstay from last year’s lineup who hit .271 with eight stolen bases in 51 games played.
Siena is deep at the outfield spots, and when Ferro and Brinkman are pitching, their positions could be filled by a number of role players. Senior Kristen Borsella saw action in 27 games, mostly as a pinch-runner, and could put her good speed to use patrolling the gaps. Sophomore Stefanie Sueda, sister of 2010 graduate Stacie, adds speed off the bench, and Taylor Guerin and Jessika-Jo Sandrini could see time as well.
SCHEDULE Weather permitting, Siena will play in 51 games during the 2011 regular season. The schedule is highlighted by three early-season tournaments. The Saints will kick off the year with four games in Cary, N.C. on February 26 and 27, before traveling to Baltimore, Maryland, for four more games during the first week of March. The biggest
tournament on Siena’s regular-season slate starts on March 13 in Orlando, Fla., when the Saints will play twelve games in a week against competition from around the country.
MAAC play begins with an April 2 doubleheader at Marist and Siena’s first home games are set for April 6, when the Saints host Binghamton in a 2:30 twin bill. It’s the first of eight doubleheaders the Saints will host at Siena Field in just 31 days between that date and May 7, when a Senior Day twin killing against Iona will end the 2011 regular season.
The top four teams in MAAC play will advance to the MAAC Tournament, which will begin on May 12 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
