2011 Outlook

Anchored by a slew of returning talent, a new head coach, and a first-year pitching coach, Siena softball returns to the field in 2011 looking to improve their win total for the second straight year. In total, the Saints return eight players who saw action in 35 or more games in 2010, as well as their entire pitching staff. There is some change in the program, though, as Bill Lajeunesse will begin his first year as head coach of the Saints in 2011 after four seasons as an assistant. Abby Arceneaux has also joined the coaching staff after stints at Union College and Cornell University.

Pitchers Siena’s pitching staff loses no firepower from last year’s unit and should see considerable improvement due to the experience gained in 2010. Senior Courtney Brinkman, junior Amanda Filippazzo, and sophomore Mandy Ferro were all counted on to provide quality innings last season and they could unite to become one of the conference’s top staffs.

Injuries limited Ferro’s time in the circle as a freshman, relegating her to the outfield after nine appearances. Filippazzo pitched through pain as well, but led the Saints with eight wins, 22 complete games, and 101 strikeouts. Brinkman meanwhile, was a consistent hurler, leading the staff with a 3.93 ERA.

The staff could also be bolstered by the arrival of freshmen Darcy Gardner and Jessika-Jo Sandrini. Both are highly- rated prospects fromthe west coast and Lajeunesse and Arceneaux hope they can step right in and contribute in their first season in Loudonville.

Catchers The Saints return junior Nastasha Powlowsky who has started behind the plate in both of her prior seasons at Siena. She has established herself as a reliable defensive presence, committing just five errors in 50 games in 2010 and throwing out 28.9% of would-be base stealers. Powlowsky has also belted four homers and has flashed speed with six steals to this point in her collegiate career.

Powlowsky be backed up by classmate Jen Duell and freshman Taylor Guerin. Duell saw action in 19 games in 2010, while Guerin is a local product from nearby Shaker High School.

Shannon Jones

Infielders The Saint infield is led by sophomore standout Shannon Jones, who had one of the greatest freshman seasons in program history in 2010. She hit .344, with six home runs, 33 RBI, and 55 hits, and was an All-MAAC Second Team selection. She’ll likely hit third in the Siena lineup this coming season.

Senior Kirstyn Vaughn and sophomore Kayla Kaminsky could end up splitting time at first. Vaughn played in 35 games last season and showed glimpses of excellence, posting three multi-hit games in less than a week during mid-April. Meanwhile, Kaminsky saw action in 27 contests and could earn a spot in themiddle of Siena’s lineup.

Siena will need to fill holes at second and third base in 2011 due to the graduation of Jessica Mushel and
