AFS Technology Transfer
Metalcasting Congress 2011 AFS will host the 115th
Metalcasting Congress, to be held April
5-8, 2011, at the Renaissance Hotels & Resorts, Schaumburg, IL. The Metalcasting Congress will feature more than 100 tech- nical presentations discussing the latest innovations in casting technology and process improvements. The Metalcasting Con- gress is the largest annual gathering for metalcasters in North America, as it provides the venue to learn from industry experts and network with other foundry personnel.
Educational sessions featuring technical papers and panel dis- cussions will cover all areas related to metal casting produc- tion, metallurgy and plant management. The casting design and purchasing sessions will include presentations on casting design, process and material basics, process and material ad- vancements, computer-based modeling and simulation, rapid prototyping, casting conversions, identifying suppliers and supply chain management. The casting design and purchas- ing sessions are being held in conjunction with Cast in North America. This area of the show will provide an invaluable op- portunity for metalcasters to exhibit their capabilities to their customers—buyers and designers—from across the globe. Special features will include the AFS President’s Session, with a message of critical importance to the metalcasting industry. The session will also feature an update on the U.S. economic recovery in the manufacturing sector.
Conferences, Workshops and Webinars
AFS recently hosted a sold-out Best Practices in Ductile from workshop at AFS. The workshop discussed future trends in ductile iron and provided practical advice and best practices for ductile iron production. Among the topics that were addressed in the workshop were ductile iron specifications, melting and charge materials, inoculation and treatment practice, filtration, gating, risering, quality assurance, austempering, and the latest in research and new developments. The complete workshop is
available on DVD through the AFS bookstore. Work is under- way to produce a Spanish language version of this workshop. .
AFS hosted a meeting for titanium metalcasters and casting us- ers on Dec. 14, 2010. It was the first time that AFS had hosted a meeting specifically related to titanium casting. The meeting reviewed some current industry work in Ti and concluded with a brainstorming session to identify technology needs in the Ti casting industry that can be used as a roadmap for potential re- search and development. The initial meeting may lead to further work in titanium and a potential ongoing Ti working group.
AFS Technical Services has partnered with the National In- dustrial Sand Association (NISA) to create a research con- sortium to find, develop and monitor research focused on improving the sand casting process. A workshop, held at AFS on March 8, 2011, included presentations on the lat- est research on dimensional accuracy and tolerances in sand casting and brainstorming sessions to help define technical challenges and potential paths forward to move sand casting into the future. A workshop on casting copper-base non-lead alloys is sched- uled for September 2011. The workshop is the outgrowth of the recently completed AFS No-Lead Alloy Consortium. The consortium was developed in response to new state and federal legislation that will mandate the use of non-leaded alloys for water applications. The new legislation will likely also drive the full copper foundry industry away from the traditional leaded alloy toward an increased use of non-lead- ed alloy alternatives. The workshop will share the experi- ences of leading foundries who have made the transition to no-lead alloys who will discuss the technical aspects of that change, including issues relating to melting, pouring and gating.
