The youth in America voted at the same rate in 2008 as they did in 2004. This doesn’t take anything away from what was by any measure, a fantastic and successful campaign – he won the Presidency by a landslide - but people need to understand what is true about that campaign and what is myth. The myth is that voter turn out made a huge difference and these additional voters were effectively tar- geted. The truth is that voter turnout didn’t make the difference. What made the difference was the success of the Obama campaign in running a fifty- state campaign.


RS: He changed the map for his campaign.


MS: Yes. A fifty-state campaign was absolutely out- of-the-box thinking for a democratic candidate, and that made a huge difference. Also, building organizations through caucuses in states and not through primaries made a difference. A fifty state campaign allowed the other tools, like social media and online fundraising, to have a greater impact. It was just masterful execution.


RS: It would be fascinating to study the ‘08 Presi- dential campaign and see how much money has been made by all of the people who were involved in one way or another. How they have cashed in on the Obama brand.


MS: Look, to me so much of this is simply about a perfectly executed campaign with a once-in-di- rect-generation candidate who was inspirational to so many voters.


CR: To those reading this, those who are setting out on campaign trails in one or more of the numerous provincial elections happening across the country, or in the federal election campaign if it happens, we’d say don’t buy into the easy myths and …it’s campaigning still a lot of hard work. There is no easy way to win. It’s about the hard work - recruiting people, raising money and most importantly, about ideas. That’s 6 myths debunked from The Senator this week.
