EAGLE HUNTERS Kazakhstan

The lone hunter’s horse races through the snowy mountains. The hunter lifts the hood from the head of the golden eagle perched on his arm. The bird takes fl ight. A fox is near. The eagle will fi nd, track, and kill the fox. The hunter, horse, and eagle together keep an ancient art alive. The secrets of eagle hunting were passed down to this hunter through his family. Yet when the leadership of his country changed, his people’s way of life changed. Eagle hunting was banned. Today, few eagle hunters remain. One

day, their art may be lost completely. Cultures constantly adapt to the world around them. Yet sometimes when a change is too great, a part of their culture is lost forever. Then the world loses a unique part of itself that can never return.
