he Huli wigman’s eyes are rimmed with red. His leafy headdress rests on a wig made from moss and human hair. A bird’s feather pierces his nose.
The wigman stands in his village in the mountains of Papua New Guinea. He beats a drum and chants. He shuffles and stomps his feet to prove he is not afraid of unseen spirits. For centuries, the lives of his people have been inspired by the natural world. They have passed on their history and beliefs through dance, song, and costume. Today, the Huli are among many cultures that are slowly vanishing from this world. Ways of life change. Old customs are forgotten. These groups are torn from their past and pushed toward uncertain futures. Some may not survive. What will the world lose if these cultures disappear?
