WATERS TROUBLED

BY DAPHNE LIU

The sun blazes overhead. Dirt crunches underfoot. Yet National Geographic Explorer Jonathan Waterman

is not crossing a desert. He stands in the middle of the Colorado River. Once, water rushed through here. Not any more. This isn’t how his trip is supposed to end. Waterman

planned to paddle the river to the sea. He hoped to find answers. Was the river healthy? Or was it in trouble? Waterman began high in the

Rocky Mountains in Colorado. He paddled 2,173 kilometers (1,350 miles). It took almost five months. Finally, still far from the sea, the river ran dry. Now he has just one way to finish his trip. He’s on foot, and worried.
