EAGLE HUNTERS

Kazakhstan A lone hunter on horseback sees a fl ash

of red in the distance. It’s a fox. Quickly, the hunter frees his golden eagle. The bird soars into the sky. It tracks the fox and kills it. Together, hunter, horse, and eagle are keeping an ancient way of life alive. Their ancestors hunted this way thousands of years ago. They were nomads, a people who moved from place to place. They used golden eagles to hunt for food.

In recent times, many places banned hunting with eagles. Today, only about 40 eagle hunters remain. They live in houses. They sell fox pelts for money. Yet, they don’t hunt just for the money. It’s a matter of pride. It’s a way to hold on to their people’s past.
