ARIAAL Kenya
Among the Ariaal people of Kenya, it’s time to celebrate. The rainy season has just ended. Plenty of fresh green grass grows. Their cows have enough to eat. So the girls put on bead necklaces. The boys, young warriors, chant and leap, showing their weapons. They sing and dance most of the night. About 10,000 Ariaal are alive today. They live as nomads, moving from place to place with their cows. Where they go depends on the weather. When one place dries up, they move to another. The Ariaal have lived through dry spells. They have survived times when there is little food. Government leaders have told them to settle in villages. So far, the Ariaal have refused. They want to keep their way of life alive.
