TUAREG

The Sahara The camel protests. Its Tuareg master

needs it to stand. The Tuaregs are traders. Their camels carry heavy loads of salt, dates, gold, and more. They cross the Sahara, a hot desert. They start at the northern coast of Africa. They move south to the southern edge of the Sahara, then back again. They are always moving, always selling. The traders wear heavy veils. The veils protect them from stinging sands whipped up by desert winds. This is the way the Tuareg have lived for thousands of years. It’s harder today. Trains and trucks carry goods

now. The vehicles are faster than camels and can carry more. The land has been divided into many countries. Their borders block the Tuareg’s ancient routes. So do fences built by landowners. Yet the Tuareg keep moving. It is how they live.
