Lufthansa grows network
LUFTHANSA CARGO has confirmed that it is to operate MD-11 freighter services to three new destinations in its summer schedule this year – regulatory approval permitting. If that permission is received, the freight carrier’s network will expand to take
in Shenzhen, Barcelona and Kolkata. Shenzhen will be served three times a week, the return flights to Frankfurt
routeing via the Spanish city of Barcelona. Lufthansa expects ongoing demand for freight capacity on the Germany - China
routeing, with the textile industry in particular ensuring continuity of demand. Jade Cargo, in which Lufthansa Cargo holds a share, will continue to operate its
B747-400 freighter services on a twice a week frequency from Shenzhen. Lufthansa Cargo’s new twice-weekly links between Frankfurt and Kolkata will
bring to six the number of frequencies it expects to operate to India during the summer schedule. Furthermore, the jointly owned (with DHL) AeroLogic B777 freighter operator is
to add direct weekly connections from Frankfurt-Main to both Houston, Texas and Lahore in northern Pakistan.
e-Freight initiative takes a back seat
THE INTERNATIONAL Air Cargo Association (TIACA) and the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) have conducted a survey on the value of e-Freight to cargo agents. Around 55 percent of respondents said
they were aware of the International Air Transport Association-sponsored e-Freight project, but less than 20 percent said they were involved in the initiative. According to Bill Gottlieb, a past president of FIATA who was heavily

involved in the research effort: “With nearly half of the forwarders claiming not to have heard of e-Freight, we have to find ways of reinforcing the message. “It is clear that the industry has to
evolve to a new way of doing business utilising e-commerce but we need to broaden the approach and think ouside of the box in terms of how we embrace technology. “Air cargo remains woefully behind
other modes of transport in terms of e-commerce,” he added.
