T

he repetitive flash of kayak paddles at the mouth of the bay sig- nals their return. Minutes later the sea kayakers are in full view, their red, salt-stained faces smiling with accomplishment after completing a choppy two-hour training paddle along the shoreline of New Brunswick's Bay of Fundy.

The scene is similar at Vancouver's False Creek and Victoria's Gorge Waterway where sea kayakers meet after work to socialize and work out at their local paddling club. Many paddle for fitness while others train for sum- mer races. Sea kayak racing is a newcomer to the world of competitive pad- dlesports, but it's slowly picking up momentum in Canada as recreational paddlers adapt their touring skills to paddling for fitness and competition.
