Kayaking Ocean Rock Gardens

A Tsunami Rangers Guide

For those of us who associate sea kayak- ing with docile conditions and lackadaisical forays into watery safe-havens the Tsunami Rangers offer a glimpse into the life of extreme ocean exploration. Kayaking Ocean Rock Gardens captures the essence of what it means to push the limits of technical skill, boat construction and courage to play in the

continually changing conditions of waves, swells, rock islands and shoreline. For those paddlers who get inspired to “try this at home” the film covers basic skills to get you in and out of situations that will generate years’ worth of aprés-paddle stories, as in “Do you remember the time when I was slammed into the backside of that churning cauldron?” The video provides practical risk-management strategies for situations that you probably thought were beyond control. Next time your whitewater paddling friends call you a sissy because of your sea kayaking proclivities, plunk them in front of the boob tube and set them straight once and for all. Kayaking Ocean Rock Gardens gives a “rock ‘em, sock ‘em” view of the sea that makes the local whitewater play spot look like an indoor wave pool. The intrepid Tsunami Rangers guide you into a hydraulic amusement park where rides are controlled by your skills, grit and self-rescue confidence. No matter what level you’re at, it’ll get you thinking about pushing the limits. You may be surprised what you find yourself exploring. Running Time: 30 min. $30.00 US. The Zen of Wooden Kayak Building by Chesapeake Light Craft

Boat builder John Harris estimates that a kit boat can be completed in 70 hours if you have a space to put it all together, the proper tools, a helping hand once and a while and a well- planned assembly strategy. Before you guffaw in disbelief, consider that the help of some expert coaching via instructional video could save a novice builder a lot of time. As we pressed play and anticipated dozing off into dreamland, we

were surprised at the entertainment value of this instructional video. Serious boat-building lessons are mixed with comical segues and on-screen pop-up bubbles reinforce helpful hints about stitch-and-glue boat building, like posi- tioning the shell deck-down when gluing so the drying epoxy will run into the seam of the deck and sidewalls rather than away. The progression of the film is smooth and easy to understand. Time was well spent in the editing room creating a concise instructional reference video, separated into various build- ing segments allowing the viewer to either fast-forward or rewind to steps they wish to review. Although the film deals primarily with the construction of a Chesapeake 16 stitch-and-glue kit, the process and techniques covered are easily transferable to other manufactured kits or even the daunting task of cre- ating your own boat from scratch. Running Time: 60 min. DVD or VHS: $29.95 US. Order at www.clcboats.com.
