February an EWP tourney drew teams from all over west- ern North America as well as a team from Great Britain. The Brits won all their games convincingly. “Their level of play is amazing,” said fan Jill Stafford. “In Europe it’s a big sport, while in Canada there are only 8 to 12 clubs.” Canoe polo season wraps up June 28–29 with the Canadian Championships at an as yet unconfirmed loca- tion. Info:
www.paddleewp.com…. One of the first white- water events in Alberta will be a freestyle comp May 24–25 on the Kananskis. See
www.abkayaker.com…. Following its successful Tofino surf fest last fall, the newly formed Vancouver Island Whitewater Paddling Society (
www.surkayak.org) has a long list of events planned. A slalom race on the Cowichan River April 12–13 is quickly followed by the Big Bad Browns Boatercross on the Browns River May 10–11. With exploratory paddling going on across the Island there are rumors of a new whitewater guidebook in the works. Society prez Shayne Vollmers has been work- ing to get a low-flow playspot built on the Puntledge River and has been busy fighting microhydro projects. The B.C. government has said “The province is open for business,” and that includes rivers. Applications for microhydro projects are popping up everywhere in B.C. Eight are being built, 12 have been approved, and 70 oth- ers are in the works…. The Whitewater Kayak Association of B.C. is working hard to make sure paddlers are includ- ed in stakeholder consultations but they need support in the form of voices. See
