Digital Canoe Coach: Personalized video coaching by Paul Mason Productions

The guy who appeared at a tender age in one of the first ever whitewater canoeing instructional videos, Path of the Paddle, is on the cutting age once again. Paul Mason, co- author of Thrill of the Paddle: The Art of Whitewater Canoeing, has just introduced personal- ized video canoe instruction. You film yourself, in any video format, doing a variety of single- bladed whitewater moves and mail the results to Paul for analysis. Paul assesses your technique and compiles a computer CD with a tightly edited Quicktime video highlighting your strengths and blunders with detailed coaching in the form of voice-over narration, superimposed images of demonstration-quality paddlers performing the moves correctly beside you, slow motion, freeze frames, on-screen annotation and diagrams, and timely cuts to technique demos by the pros. Ten minutes is enough time for multiple techniques such as forward paddling, eddy turns, back surfing, boofs and rodeo moves, depending on the footage you provide. The service is well- suited for committed intermediate to advanced paddlers looking to refine their skills. The CD also includes ten minutes of stock video instruction and digital images of annotated screen- shots that you can print and take with you to the river. Included with the package are one free email consultation and a funky sticker for your canoe. Letting the instructor stay home while you do all the paddling turns out to be pretty cost-effective, and you get a CD that you can view over and over again. Up to two paddlers per CD. Cost: $190 Cdn (add $25 for non-digi- tal video formats). pmp@magma.ca.

New York Exposed: Volume 1, by Dennis Squires

This is the first half of a com-

prehensive New York State guidebook by Dennis Squires. It’s mainly a creek book with some class I–III runs included.

Dennis has paddled the vast majority of these runs in the past 14 years, garnering many stories and much wisdom along the way. Amidst the informative river descriptions his musings cover bike shuttles, bug- infested put-ins, protective landowners, portaging, soul searching, skill development, scouting, ironic humour, ice-cream headaches, wildlife encounters and more. Hand-sketched maps of river put-ins and takeouts are simple and specific, including side roads often neg- lected on smaller-scale maps. Add a gas station road map and you’ve got road-trips galore. Many of the runs seem to be full-on so seek the opinions of locals about current conditions. Dennis has admittedly kept a hand- ful of secret runs in his back pocket to provide material for volume two—stay tuned. $19.95 US from White Water Outlaw Publishing, www.whitewateroutlaw.com.
