Basic Life Support

The procedure outlined below covers the most common scenario when dealing with a casualty who has collapsed i.e. sudden cardiac arrest. The casualty in this scenario is an adult who does not respond, has no breathing, has no signs of circulation and has not collapsed due to drowning, choking or trauma.

Check response

Gently shake the shoulders and ask loudly, "Are you alright?". Speak loudly and clearly. Always assume there may be a neck injury and shake gently.

If there is no response

Shout for help.If possible leave the casualty in the position in which you found him and open the airway. When it is not possible to carry out an assessment of the casualty in the position found, turn him onto his back and open the airway.

Give TWO effective rescue breaths

Check for breathing

Keep the airway open and look, listen and feel for breathing for no more than 10 seconds. Look for chest movement. Listen for sounds of breathing. Feel for breath on your cheek. If the casualty is not breathing, call for emergency help. Give two effective rescue breaths.

Ensure head tilt and chin lift. Pinch the soft part of the nose with the finger and thumb of the hand which was on the forehead. Open the mouth. Take a deep breath to fill your lungs with air and place your lips around the casualty’s mouth making sure you have a good seal. Blow steadily into the mouth and watch the chest rise. Maintaining head tilt and chin lift, take your mouth away and watch the chest fall.

Open the airway

Place one hand on the forehead and gently tilt the head back. Remove any obvious obstructions from the casualty’s mouth including dislodged dentures, but leave well-fitting dentures in place. Place the fingertips of the other hand under the point of the casualty’s chin and lift the chin. If injury to the neck is suspected, handle the head very gently and try to avoid head tilt. Check for breathing.

Look for signs of circulation

Look, listen and feel for breathing, coughing, movement, normal colour or any other sign of life for not more than 10 seconds. If there are no signs of circulation, or you are at all unsure, start chest compressions.
