President’s Message Greetings:

With the annual celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday upon us, I am reminded of something the great civil rights leader once said: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Tis strikes a chord for me because it is a question we ask our students to consider while they are here and after they leave. It springs directly from our educational mission: to prepare students for lives of leadership and service.

Admissions John W. Garland, President, CSU

Students who choose Central State University do not simply go to college; as one of my colleagues says, they grow through college. Te nurturing environment and the many opportunities Central State provides for students to grow and develop personally as well as professionally have produced generations of leaders who contribute to the good of their communities and to the country as a whole.

As an institution, Central State models the servant leadership we strive to instill in our students. One example is the community-building work being done by Central State University-Dayton Campus (CSU-Dayton). In addition to increasing access to higher education, the campus is serving as a center for community engagement. For example, CSU-Dayton recently convened and hosted a dialogue with community leaders that was aimed at addressing the increasing gaps in the local social service network. An action plan to address unmet needs is being developed as a result of that meeting.

Te Dayton campus’ recent initiatives reflect its mission statement, which emerged out of a strategic visioning process involving community leaders: to transform communities and change lives by preparing inspirational leaders. Tis is what Central State University has done since its inception in 1887 and what it will continue to do in the years to come.
