Reducing bearing complexity and mounting costs N
SK’s RHP range of Self-Lube housed bearing units help OEM manufacturers and end users to improve their competitiveness, cutting build and maintenance times by reducing bearing complexity and mounting costs. Self-Lube bearing units provide
integrated benefits in general manufacturing industry, food processing, materials handling and agricultural applications. By providing units that are ready assembled to bolt into place, they enable designers to easily and economically solve specific bearing problems relating to component complexity, mounting, and also bearing maintenance and life in difficult environments. A simple comparison supports the case for ‘bolt-on’ convenience. The typical mounting arrangement for a standard ball bearing includes a number of separate components, some having to be accurately machined. These components include a housing, stepped shaft; inner and outer ring retainer and lock nut and thread. Not surprisingly, this arrangement is both
expensive and time consuming to install. In contrast, one of NSK’s RHP range of Self-Lube units employs the same basic bearing, but integrates all other elements needed to assemble the bearing, together with facilities for sealing and relubricating. In practice therefore, the housed bearing has reduced the number of expensive components, simplified assembly and cut stock holding costs.
pillow block and flange types are used for normal and medium duty applications, while zinc plated press steel units are available for lighter duty operations. In addition, as many Self-Lube units are called upon to operate in harsh environments, NSK has introduced the Silver-Lube range of corrosion resistant bearings and housing.
Self-Lube bearings conform to ISO standards, and are available in different materials and configurations. Cast Iron
These are an excellent solution in applications where frequent washdowns are necessary, optimum hygiene standards are required and good chemical resistance is important. Together with the RHP Life- Lube range, Silver Lube bearings can also benefit from the sealed- for- life lubrication provided by NSK’s Molded-Oil technology. Ideal for operation in wet or inaccessible applications, Molded Oil is a solid lubricant. This means that operating environments are kept free of grease – very important in food applications. In addition, there is no need for refilling of lubricant, as Molded Oil provides a continuous supply of lubricating oil. l

Linear guides feature patented bearings for medium loads
T
homson is extending its range of linear guides with the addition of ball-guided profile rails from the 400 series. Its installation sizes and hole patterns have been adjusted to meet general industry standards, which means that the new 400 series can be used as a direct replacement for existing systems. As a result, Thomson says this profile rail product can be used as a replacement in all applications for medium loads, without incurring additional costs for design or modification work.
The ball tracks, which are positioned at an angle of 45 degrees to each other, ensure precise alignment, making installation easy. They also offer even loading rates in all directions, meaning that these systems can be used in a wide range of applications. A patented recirculating ball-bearing guide made from polymer keeps noise to a minimum when the system is running, and the scraper ensures that

lubricant does not escape outside the unit. The 413 design with ball chain guarantees quieter operation; even at high adjustment speeds, noise is kept to a minimum. This version also features integrated lubrication pockets between the individual balls. Features include:
l Straighter rails thanks to advanced grinding technologies
l Simple installation and increased accuracy with continuous rails up to 4m long
l Smooth, low-noise motion thanks to patented recirculating ball bearings and optimised geometry
l Increased lubricant service life thanks to integral lubrication pockets
l Carriages available in various designs and sizes
l Modular designs that can be modified on-site. l

Bearings offer high load ratings and low friction
S
chaeffler is launching a new FAG high-capacity cylindrical roller bearing for wind turbine gearboxes that offers higher load ratings and reduced friction due to a new cage design.
The basic static and dynamic load ratings of the new bearings are 6 per cent higher than those of a conventional cylindrical roller bearing with solid brass cage, resulting in a 20 per cent increase in rating life. These new high-capacity cylindrical roller bearings have a sheet steel cage that enables the design to be more compact than with conventional solid brass cages. This slimmer cage leaves space for at least one additional rolling element in the bearing, which increases the load rating significantly. l
