imagine Optic outperforms expectations and expands

Imagine Optic, a manufacturer of Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors, has reported higher- than-expected sales via its US subsidiaries Imagine Optic Inc and Axiom Optics. Both created in December 2009, the companies outperformed expectations with orders totalling more than $800K in their first year of operations. ‘Our US subsidiaries that were launched at the end of 2009 have made remarkable progress in the North American market,’ said Samuel Bucourt, Imagine Optic’s CEO. ‘Founding Imagine Optic Inc has enabled us to strengthen our ties with existing US customers and develop new relationships on numerous high- profile projects. Axiom Optics, a division of Imagine Optic Inc, has shown tremendous potential by developing solutions that blend our products with those offered by other suppliers of high- quality components to satisfy its growing list of customers.’ Sister company Imagine

Eyes, which specialises in adaptive-optics ophthalmic instrumentation, also reported a record 2010. With sales topping 1.2M€ ($US1.6M) and orders at nearly 1.3M€ ($US1.75M), the company’s sales grew more than 35 per cent in 2010. The company has also opened

offices in the Pythagore optics- photonics cluster in Shanghai, China. The offices are in Yangpu District, near 12 of China’s leading universities.

Green photonics and biophotonics focus areas for Laser World of Photonics

Lasers and laser systems for manufacturing, green photonics, biophotonics, and life sciences are the key topics at this year’s upcoming Laser World of Photonics trade fair, which will be held from 23 to 26 May in Munich, Germany. Optical technologies will also be a focus at the trade fair and the accompanying World of Photonics Congress. In 2009 the biannual event attracted 1,034

exhibitors and 25,365 visitors. The number of exhibitors and visitors from outside Germany has risen over the history of the trade fair and now stands at 57 per cent for exhibitors and 51 per cent for visitors. Industries covered range from automobile

construction, mechanical engineering, tool-making, job order production and the aerospace industry through to photovoltaics, electronics and micro- production. The topics in green photonics will include energy and the environment, photovoltaics, lighting, energy efficiency and climate protection. Exhibitors will show here how optical technologies make a substantial contribution towards efficient production and energy conservation, where they are used for renewable energies, and how they can optimise measuring and test technology. During the trade fair research institutes and

companies will present the new applications, methods and processes in biophotonics. The

Biophotonics Forum and the European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) will also show current achievements and future possibilities. Applications in the area of security and defence

will be examined for the first time at the trade fair as a separate topic. Exhibitors here will present laser applications from aerospace, such as displays for civil aviation, stabilisation systems and defence systems. In addition to the trade fair, six conferences are held under the umbrella of the World of Photonics Congress. The Congress programme will include a new event, the Optofluidics Conference, which is being organised by the European Optical Society (EOS). The Optical Metrology Conference includes an additional subconference on the topic of videometrics in its programme and the ECBO will look in 2011 at clinically oriented topics in addition to its traditional programme contents.

rofin-Sinar Technologies has released record quarterly financial results on the back of strong demand for the company’s laser products from the consumer electronics industry, where they are used in applications such as cutting, welding, marking, micro- drilling and micro-structuring.

Rofin-Sinar posts record quarterly results In the October to December

2010 period, sales of lasers for marking and micro-applications rose by 72 per cent, while sales of laser products for macro applications increased by 24 per cent. Component sales also increased in the period by 43 per cent. These results exceeded

rofin-Sinar’s original forecasts for the period. The company attributes the quarter’s success to stability within the North American market, a strengthening of European markets, increased sales to the Asian market, and a higher demand from the majority of the industries which they serve.
