interest in non-proprietary DRMs is destined to fail.

However, with any successful standard, it is important to have a single, governing body. Although there are many companies involved with a consortium that do have a commercial interest in non-proprietary DRMs, it is that commercial rationale that serves as motivation to update the standard and quickly correct any flaws that may come to light. The consortium, therefore, provides a credible source of revenue protection. Many companies have seen the benefits of the consortium approach, including Project Canvas/YouView, which last year announced that it will also support multiple DRM schemes, but strategically chose to launch with only Marlin because of its open standards, flexibility and market acceptance.

Verimatrix has also taken a commercial license to Intertrust’s Marlin technology. Verimatrix provides a complete Marlin Broadband solution as part of its MultiRights offering, integrated with its single security authority VCAS architecture. The solution includes support for secure multicast, download and streaming service delivery, incorporating the

Marlin Secure Streaming Specification (MS3).

Verimatrix is a long-term supporter of Marlin DRM via membership in the Marlin Developer Community (MDC) and the Open IPTV Forum, and a member of the founding set of partners for Marlin Partner Program (MPP) in 2008.

Unlocking the market and increasing security

It is important to note that non- proprietary DRM schemes enable different levels of security and a plethora of different services. It supports various kinds of streaming services, download services, including download to home, and it can also enable public service broadcasters to control the rights of the content that they deliver over the Internet. It is also worth noting that not all services are provided on a pay-TV basis. In this particular environment there are certain kinds of content that are transmitted freely over the Internet, but only for a limited period of time due to licensing restrictions in the original content agreement. For example, all content transmitted by the BBC is available for Internet

delivery for seven days after transmission, but not thereafter. There are a number of sets of rules associated with non-paid content that have to be observed to ensure that content has some commercial value after broadcast. A non-proprietary DRM scheme like Marlin is sophisticated enough to provide such a level of security. It can also extend to offline or untethered consumption and can be deployed on PCs, tablet devices and other new consumption models, with the operator-controlled business model extending to the offline domain. There is also considerable room for expansion to new areas such as connected TV.

Conclusion

It’s easy to see the advantages of a multi-vendor DRM scheme, especially as we approach a veritable explosion of ‘TV everywhere’. Although detractors point to the pressing need for accountability and responsiveness in a market that is highly dynamic, such open DRM standards can go a long way to help enable the type of consumer choice and transparent experience that all digital TV operators are aiming for.
