Last year was a particularly good year for the machine vision industry – the AIA reports a 53.7 per cent growth in North American sales for 2010 over 2009. This might be because 2009 was such a tough year for the industry, but the strong recovery is still impressive. In terms of technology, some of the trends we’re seeing in the industry include a shift to 3D imaging, as well as a shift from monochrome to colour imaging. Colour imaging represents a threefold increase in data compared to black and white, but there are other complexities involved in getting an accurate colour representation. Stephen Mounsey addresses some of these issues in his article on page 10. Increasing the number of spectral channels

beyond red, green and blue complicates things further, but extending the spectral range of the imaging system yields benefits for certain applications. Multispectral and hyperspectral imaging, operating over wide spectral ranges, are finding uses in environmental monitoring, as the article on page 18 describes.
