SCOTTISH BRANCH ON THE MAP The Scotland Branch has been running a membership assistance programme (MAP) for more than a year to help members and non- members progress through the Professional Review process to become Chartered. The programme offers help with

CARDIFF STUDENTS RECEIVE AWARDS Cardiff Centre Chair Simon Williams visited the University of Glamorgan in July to present prizes to the best- performing final year students. Williams was a student at the University of Glamorgan and former prize winner himself more than 10 years ago. He presented awards to the following top-performing graduates: • Owen David Roberts — Best Overall Student; BSc Project Management Construction: CIOB Certificate of Excellence and £60 Cheque. • Jessica Bowler-Davies — Best Overall Student; BSc Quantity Surveying: CIOB Certificate of Excellence and £60 Cheque. • Iona Pippen — Best Overall Student; BSc Real Estate Appraisal and Management: CIOB Certificate of Excellence and £60 Cheque. • Glyndwr Donovan — Best Overall Student; Foundation Degree Construction Technology and Management: CIOB Certificate of Excellence. • James Stephen Lewis — Best Overall Student; Foundation Degree Science in Surveying: CIOB Certificate of Excellence.

OBITUARY: DAVID STOTT CIOB Member David Alexander Stott sadly passed away on 19 August 2010, aged 35, following an illness. Ambitious and dedicated to his

career, David had progressed rapidly in the 13 years since graduating from the University of Abertay in Dundee with a Bsc Honours. David worked for well-known

employers in Scotland including the Robertson Group and Barr Construction before taking up his latest position in 2008 as construction project manager with Stewart Milne. David displayed great talent during his short career and was involved with some of the largest projects in Scotland, including Tesco builds. David’s passing is seen by all those

who worked with him as a tragic loss to the construction industry.

Salford students impress with design for live client

The design for the new Salford City Football Club (SCFC) looks set to come from talented students at the CIOB-accredited School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford. The SCFC clubhouse was destroyed by fire earlier

this year and students from the university were asked to compete in teams to come up with winning designs. More than 360 students forged into 30 multidisciplinary teams involving construction project managers, QS’s, architectural design technologists, building surveyors and property managers. The 30 teams were shortlisted to 10 in early

summer who went on to refine, consolidate, and deliver their final proposals at a public exhibition held at the Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays. Also present were members of the Salford City FC committee, local councillors, MPs and esteemed construction professionals including CIOB Greater Manchester Chair Michael Pye. Three winning teams were then chosen and

attended an awards ceremony and fundraising gala dinner at Manchester United Football Club’s Salford Suite with 250 guests. More than £14,000 was raised to kick-start the rebuilding process. The panel of judges comprises: Professor Mike Kagioglou, head of School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford; Brian Smethurst, construction director at G & J Seddon; John Roberts from sports stadia specialist, AFL Architects; Martin Simpson from Ove Arup Associates (Manchester);

Graham Stringer MP; Cllr Peter Connor (Salford CC); Cllr Derek Antrobus (Salford CC); Eric Stokes, director of undergraduate studies in the School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford. The judges commended the high standard and

said “any one of the three teams’ proposals could have been built and would have proven admirable for Salford City FC and the community”. AFL Architects and G & J Seddons have now agreed

to scrutinise the final work and, following discussion with interested parties will shortly agree a final winner. The winning building will go forward to Salford

City Council for Planning Approval later this year and construction is planned during 2011.

NI firms in CMYA final as Ireland event launches

Three construction managers from Northern Ireland have made it into the finalists list for this year’s Construction Manager of the Year Awards (CMYA). The three shortlisted are Richard Hodges

(TAL) for Mersey Street Housing (Phase 2) in the Housing/Accommodation under £12m category; Wilson Murray (McKenzies NI) for Asda Superstore NI in the New Build/ Refurbishment Projects £4m-£6m category; and Eamon Lavery (O’Hare & McGovern) for The McClay Library, Queens University, Belfast

in the New Build/Refurbishment Projects £26m-£40m category. Winners and medalists will be announced
