The Belfast skyline continues its development with another new building – the Metropolitan Arts Centre (The MAC). The project is taking shape in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter in the city centre, and is generating much local excitement. The £17.7m MAC will be Northern Ireland’s

flagship home for all the arts (visual art, theatre, dance, music and comedy) aiming to attract around 200,000 visitors annually when it opens in early 2012. The 5,500m2

arts centre will be six storeys

high and will house two theatres, three visual art galleries (with innovative closed-control gallery technology and design), dance studios, rehearsal rooms, offices and a bar/restaurant.

The MAC is the first public building from the

winner of the 2008 Young Architect of the Year award – Hackett Hall McKnight. The construction work will provide employment

for 420 people. The contract was awarded to Bowen Mascott, a joint venture between two building firms from Cork and Belfast. Robert Price, project manager and Stephen Lee,

site manager, will be taking CIOB members on a tour of the site on Friday 15 October 2010. Booking is essential.

confirmed — fellow industry leaders, and senior CIOB members. The dinner will be held in The Hilton Caledonian Hotel, Princes Street, Edinburgh on Wednesday 27 October. It will start at 5pm with tea and coffee before the forum at 5.30pm and the networking at 7.30pm. The dress code is lounge suits. Tickets are £80 per person.
