USBC Women’s Championships
Award-winning event heads to Syracuse
The USBC Women’s Championships is riding the momentum of a successful makeover in 2010, and participants are excited about returning to New York state for the first time since 1996.
The event experienced a complete makeover last year in El Paso, Texas, with lanes constructed in a convention center and a new handicap format. The transformation earned the event national recognition with a 2010 SportsTravel Award from SportsTravel magazine.
More than 30,000 women enjoyed the 48 specially- constructed lanes and unique vendor area that were built inside the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center. Except for the National Bowling Stadium, where the tournament has been held every third year since 1997, it previously was held in traditional bowling centers.
For 2011, the tournament will be contested at Syracuse’s Oncenter Complex, which is accustomed to the championship environment after hosting the Open Championships and USBC Masters in 1999.
This year’s event will mark the Women’s Championships’ third visit to Syracuse. It was held there in 1940 when 1,185 teams turned out and 1954 with 4,538 five-player teams. Competition starts April 7 and will run for 88 days.
While already a destination for women of all ages and skill levels, the three-division, all-handicap format has added a new level of excitement. Bowlers now are placed in one of the following divisions (prizes also awarded for the top scratch scores overall):
• Diamond Division: For bowlers with averages of 180 and higher, with handicap based on 100-percent of 220
• Ruby Division: For bowlers with averages from 150-179, with handicap based on 100-percent of 180
• Sapphire Division: For bowlers with averages of 149 and below, with handicap based on 100-percent of 150
