ENTRY LEVEL HD

S

ony’s HDV range provides an entry level path into the world of HD, with the format proving essential for TV productions

shot on a budget, in remote locations or in difficult conditions. All cameras in the range offer down-conversion capability of their 1080i recordings for operation in SD, while providing the flexibility of a migration route to HD. Sony’s line up includes

the HVR-V1E, HVR-Z1E,

HVR-Z5E and HVR-Z7E. In this issue, we also look at Sony’s miniature HD block camera the FCB-H11 which incorporates a 1/3-type HD CMOS image sensor with approximately two million pixels. Used on Camera Corps Q Ball robotic camera, it produces clear HD images at 1080i and 720p with a 10x optical zoom.

MAKING A KILLING

Rob Lemkin explains how his feature on the killing fields of Cambodia could only have been made using the Z1E

Enemies of the People, the real story of the Killing Fields of Cambodia, has been described as one of the most harrowing and compelling stories of our times. Filmmaker Rob Lemkin and his Cambodian colleague Thet Sambath spent three years tracking down the killers and senior officials of the Khmer Rouge regime responsible for the deaths of up to two million people in the 1970s. Sambath was able to persuade them to break

a 30 year silence and confess to some of the most appalling acts in human history. Part of their success was the low-key way in which Lemkin and Sambath were able to work in the Cambodian countryside using the Z1E camcorder shooting to tape. With Lemkin on camera and gun mike and Sambath with radio mike, the simplicity of the Z1E set up meant that people very quickly forgot about the fact that they were being filmed.

28 theproducer Winter 2011 Lemkin recalls: “One reason I shot to tape was that

power was not always in constant supply so backing up to computer in the evening (when frankly, a beer after a gruelling day would be better) could be tricky.” The Oscar-shortlisted film,

released in December

with screenings on More4 and PBS in the pipeline, was shot on HDV in interlaced mode with colourist Vince Narduzzo rendering it with a progressive scan for a cinematic look. “The scene at the end where the killers admit to cannibalism lit only by torch flames had to be shot at 18db gain,” says Lemkin. “It was shot in a very remote location and the insect noise was deafening. I knew the scene was incredibly powerful but I was anxious that it may be unwatchable. By the time Vince had finished with it the image was chillingly dramatic. It amazes me that the Z1E could get such strong images in such low light.”
