Frightening things are destined to happen to beautiful people on Living TV this year. At least that’s what is promised from Living’s first foray into drama Bedlam, billed as a sexy, stylish and scary paranormal six-parter from Red Production Company, written and created by Neil Jones, David Allison and Chris Parker. Set around Bedlam Heights – an apartment block


converted from a pre-Victorian lunatic asylum – the look for the show was influenced by Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and US TV series such as Supernatural: a glossy, dark and moody feel rather than the gritty British horror look. So a camera capable of taking top quality 35mm-style images on a TV drama budget was required. Because the series needed to be shot on tape for post through 3SixtyMedia, the 9000, supplied by 24-7 Drama, was the obvious choice, capable of 4:4:4 quality HDCAM SR recording.

HIGH DRAMA AT LIVING Red turned to the SRW-9000 for Living TV’s first foray into TV drama to capture a glossy look for Bedlam


To get the glossy film look DoP Jono Smith and


director John Strickland decided on combining the 9000 with a Pro 35 adaptor and Cooke lenses, plus matte box. “With all that on board it was a pretty cumbersome set up, but there’s no doubting the beautiful, uncompressed HD pictures that the 9000 is capable of,” says Smith, who was DoP on episodes 1, 2 and 4. “It really did look fabulous and handled Tungsten lighting very well.” DoP Tim Palmer, who shot episodes 3, 5 and


6, adds: “Best of all the skin tones are good, and for me everything else is secondary to that.” Now available in a PL version, the 9000 can be used in conjunction with a wider range of film lenses for more creative flexibility. Jono Smith concludes: “The end result is a stylish, good looking drama series which will surprise Living’s viewers.”
