HOW DO WE SELECT our favourite photos of the year from thousands of submissions? It isn’t easy. Poor lighting, blurry focus and visual clutter— the photographer’s camera case open in the foreground—are things we love because they make the first round of winnowing easier. Then out go the snapshots we’ve seen a thousand times, eye-level views of boats on the water and the photographer’s bow. Finally, with hundreds left, we follow our hearts.
