Complete Kayak Touring, Second Edition BY JONATHAN HANSON
The author of a good instructional manual is a loyal reader’s guru for life — a fact brought home to me by the canoeist’s bible Path of the Paddle by Bill Ma- son. I pored over that book’s every word in my youth, memorizing not only the paddle strokes but also Mason’s stories about rivers he’d paddled, mistakes he’d learned from, and his impassioned call to protect wild plac- es. He inspired me to make paddling my life. Does Hanson have what it takes to be an able guru? Yes. The veteran kayak guide follows Mason’s lead, listing enviro organizations in the book so readers can put their politics where their paddles are. And like any good guide, he wins us over with his humour early on in re- marks about the infamously opinionated British kayak legend Derek Hutchinson: “If he is sentenced to purgatory for any time, it will be in a 28-inch-wide Ameri- can sea kayak with an enormous rudder, giant square cargo hatches secured with rubber bands, and a fully upholstered, re- clining seat with vibro-massage…” Laugh, read on, and learn. —TS $27 Cdn // $20 US

Curgenven keeps it interesting by mixing her trademark paddler’s-perspec- tive camera angles with high- and low- angle shots.
