—Words from Readers con’t. Greenland is on fire
Many thanks for a superb early summer issue of Adventure Kayak. It was head and shoulders above anything else on the news- stands. The focus on Greenland-style pad- dling was well-timed, as the genre seems to be catching fire in Canada at the moment.

A friend of mine just passed me a copy of Adventure Kayak (v4i2) that features Greenland kayaking. I am a Greenland afficianado and thought you guys did a good job, except for that nasty version of a Greenland paddle recommended as es- sential gear.
CHRIS MCCUTCHEON Ottawa, Ontario
Glad you liked the issue, Chris. We under- stand some serious Greenland paddlers like yourself don’t consider the Betsie Bay Green- lander paddle to be a “true” Greenland-style paddle because the loom (shaft) is relatively long and the blades don’t have the diamond shape at the loom/blade transition character- istic of many homemade paddles. However, many Greenland paddlers, including Doug Van Doren, swear by the Betsie Bay paddle; it is pretty to look at and really light. For hard- core traditionalists, we included directions to build your own paddle.—Ed.
Don’t “Dear Sir” us, please
Dear Sir, May I kindly request you a free sample copy of your magazine. I thank you in advance. Regards.

Dear Rashid, You certainly may request a free sample copy of our magazine. May we decline to send one to you? We have learned from past experience to be wary of emails that begin with “Dear Sir.” For example there was that time when we were selected by the heir of a wealthy diamond merchant in a besieged African country to share his millions, and all we had to do was deposit $10,000 into a for- eign bank account as a gesture of good faith. We never heard from that guy again! But do not despair. You can read every one of our back issues for free at

mag.com. Please check it out, and then buy a subscription to help us pay our moms back the 10 grand.—Ed.
