CPLG to unlock Super League sales

Sports licensing firm CPLG Sports said it is planning to sign up a number of licensees offering Engage Super League-branded products to allow retailers to cash in on the growing popularity of Rugby League. Engage Super League is the elite division for Rugby League in Europe featuring teams from northern England, London, Wales and France, including Wigan Warriors, St Helens, Hull Kingston Rovers, Leeds Rhinos, Harlequins Rugby League and Catalans Dragons.

The 14 teams in the league play a 27-round summer season of fixtures, culminating in an eight-team play-off series. This results in an annual Grand Final played at Old Trafford, Manchester, with Wigan beating St Helens in front of 70,000-plus fans in the 2010 Grand Final.

CPLG Sport said the competition has seen attendances grow year-on-year since 2001, and is now a valuable brand in the sporting goods marketplace.

CPLG Sport has recently signed up three new licensees to offer Engage Super League-branded products, including jewellery and celebration cakes. Although these products will not be made available through the sports retail market, a CPLG Sports spokesperson said: “We have plans to sign up further licensees whose products will be suitable for sports retailers.”

CPLG Sports commercial manager Gary Jacobsen said: “The brand is increasing in popularity all the time and this is reflected in the ongoing interest we are receiving from the licensing community.”

Pure bottle to up sales

Spearmark Housewares has predicted strong sales of its EZ-Freeze Pure reusable water bottles, which combine freezer stick technology with a water filtration system. EZ-Freeze Pure bottles are available in four different volumes and with a two-piece filter replacement pack. Each filter is designed to remove chlorine odour and taste from up to 120 gallons of tap water, costing 0.7p per litre.

Spearmark Housewares said this provides a ‘convenient, eco-friendly and cost-effective way’ to carry chilled water when partaking in sports, or at work or school.

A Spearmark Housewares spokesperson said: “EZ-Freeze Pure is ideal for all sports men and women providing a greener and healthier replacement to bottled water and an ‘on the go’ alternative to house-bound filter jugs.

“By switching from bottled water to an EZ- Freeze Pure bottle consumers can save money and help reduce the mountains of plastic being landfilled each year.

“With this insight in mind and past sales of standard EZ-Freeze bottles of up to 21 bottles per store per week, Spearmark Housewares anticipates Pure sales in the UK to be as good if not better than standard EZ-Freeze bottles.”
