Garmin 310xt watch

I’m a big fan of Garmin. My current watch is the 310xt – it’s great for gadget freaks and, in my opinion, is unbeatable. You can set it up as a virtual training partner, as a way to find home if you are lost, and you can set up a target pace for a race that can tell you if you are too fast or too slow. When you get home, it will automatically upload via your PC to Garmin Connect and you can see your route, pace and heart rate superimposed on a Google Earth map. £310.99, buy.garmin.com

ASICS shorts

I can’t recommend highly enough a good pair of shorts with a smooth gusset. I just bought a pair of ASICS Eikoku 5” shorts from the ASICS shop in London and they are pretty comfy. There’s nothing much worse that running in a pair of mesh gusseted shorts, especially when it rains. That mesh can (and does, trust me) act like a cheese grater. £18, www.asics.co.uk

Avantalk Jogger

Bluetooth earphones For years I struggled with trying to listen to my podcasts/music while on the run. Cables get in the way and sweat plays havoc with your music device and earphones. Thankfully I have found a pair of Bluetooth headphones that are water resistant and have controls for play, pause, volume and track seeking. £39.99, www.amazon.co.uk

range is regarded pretty highly by my female running friends. Obviously, feeling comfortable when running is of utmost importance, and I understand that this range has straps that do not dig into the body and are designed to reduce breast movement. £29, www.sportsbra.co.uk

Recommended vendors

While it’s tempting to buy kit from the manufacturers, it’s worth checking out sports specialists and Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk) as they can be cheaper. Some of my favourites are: www.wiggle.co.uk www.startfitness.co.uk www.sweatshop.co.uk www.sportsshoes.com www.upandrunning.co.uk
