Dell Streak

The Dell Streak is the baby of the bunch with a 5” screen, so falls somewhat uncomfortably between a smartphone and a viable iPad competitor. It is probably most suited for someone who requires a fairly simple phone combined with significantly superior media viewing. It has 3G connectivity, a SIM card and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It is big enough to allow for a rich visual experience, but small enough to still fit into a pocket. Lightweight and easy to use, it features the front and back cameras to allow for video conferencing, and comes in at £399.

BlackBerry PlayBook

One to watch in early 2011 is the BlackBerry PlayBook from Research In Motion (RIM). Another 7” screen, the PlayBook is slightly thinner than the iPad and has a powerful 1GHz dual-core processor. Early models will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but no 3G connectivity. This means it will have to be teamed with a BlackBerry phone for 3G internet access, although RIM promises 3G and 4G versions in the future. It’s very portable at just 400g compared with the iPad’s 680g, and has a large widescreen display with front and rear screen cameras to enable video conferencing, important for the business audience the device will target. No price has yet been announced.

For the die-hard Apple fans, it’s worth waiting until spring 2011 when a much thinner and lighter iPad 2 will launch. It’s rumoured to feature the two cameras conspicuously missing from the first version to allow for Apple’s FaceTime video chat, as well as a USB port. n OLIVIA SOLON writes for wired.co.uk
