Stores prepare for the year’s final major release with midnight openings for World of Warcraft add-on next week by Dominic Sacco


WORLD OFWarcraft: Cataclysmshould pull huge crowds into retail outlets next week as the last big release of the year.


The latest installment in the popular online RPG – which has 12m subscribers – goes on sale on Tuesday, December 7th and is backed by midnight openings, launch events and a TV marketing campaign. The ads kicked off in October at several high- profile sports events in North America and Europe. Online and TV advertising for the game started last week and will continue to run into 2011.


GAME will host a special launch event at London’s Leicester Square on Monday, December 6th from 10pm. It will feature a costume competition, photo opportunities and more.

CONSUMER festival GameCity has set dates for its sixth iteration next year. The event in Nottingham – which will run from Tuesday, October 25th to Saturday, October 29th – comes on the back of last month’s GameCity 5 which saw a record 45,000 people attend, up 20,000 year-on-year.
