PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT S P O T L GI H T

National Qualifications – designed by parking representatives in conjunction with an awarding body to meet sector needs; nationally accredited and recognised and mapped to the relevant qualification level to indicate complexity of content. All of the programmes developed by the BPA are national

qualifications aimed at recognising the achievement of employees, providing opportunities for career advancement and sending a clear message to the public that our sector is skilled, motivated, qualified and professional. Currently parking qualifications exist in

two formats – the VRQ and the NVQ; Vocationally related qualification (VRQ) Usually delivered in a class environment, VRQs cover core knowledge required for specific parking roles. Tese are assessed by multiple- choice questions, usually completed on-line and marked by the awarding body, giving an immediate response on achievement. National vocational qualifications (NVQ) Usually delivered in the work environment, NVQs cover knowledge, understanding and skills required for specific parking roles. Assessment takes place within the workplace and assesses learner competence using a range of methods including: observation, professional discussion, assessing product evidence, questioning and witness testimony. We currently have five qualifications specific to parking, as

featured in the August edition of Parking News: ● City and Guilds Level 2 Award for Civil Enforcement Officers

(Parking) VRQ ● Edexcel BTEC Level 2 award in Vehicle Immobilising VRQ ● City and Guilds Level 3 Award for Notice Processors (Parking)

flexibility to select those parking-specific units most relevant to your speciality to form a whole qualification. Tese should be available in Spring 2011.

The missing link In developing management level qualifications specific to the parking sector, we finally forge the link that will allow learners to follow a career path within parking, developing the knowledge and skills needed along the way and demonstrating competence in the field, via a nationally recognised qualification. Tese qualifications will obviously feed into the ethos of

continuous professional development (CPD) and demonstrate your professional standing within the IPP, so remember to compile and maintain a personal record of your learning and qualifications. In the field of learning there exists huge choice of how to

acquire new knowledge and skills, and it is important we seize the opportunities available to us and cultivate the yearning to learn more and achieve more. A Chinese proverb says: ‘Learning is a treasure that will follow

its owner everywhere’ – make it your mission to grant the gift of learning to yourself, your staff and your organisation this coming year. A very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2011 from the workforce development team.
