BPA FOCUS SAFER PARKING SCHEME
All’s well in Tunbridge
Royal Victoria Place shopping centre in Tunbridge Wells has retained its Park Mark accreditation following a successful re-assessment by Eric Baldock, the Kent Police accredited assessor. T e car park has only
reported four relevant crime incidents over the past year, despite an annual vehicle throughput in excess of one million. Mike Bibby is BPA
development manager for the south east and he praised the car park team for its eff orts in making the facility safe and non-threatening for visitors.
T e assessors found the
management practices to be of a very high standard, with VSG Security responsible for patrolling and general security measures for the whole centre. ‘T e parking areas are clean,
well lit and have adequate information signs so anyone not familiar with the centre is in not in any doubt where to locate the shops, lifts and stairways,’ said Bibby. ‘Reducing crime and the fear and perception of crime is the main criterion of the Safer Parking Scheme, and this is certainly being achieved at this parking facility.’
High standards in Tunbridge shopping centre car park has been rewarded
T e award was fi rst granted
to the Royal Victoria Place car park in 2008, and each year since measures have been introduced to increase the security and safety of the parking facility, which accounts for the very low crime fi gures. Baldock said, ‘In the past
year staff at the Royal Victoria Place Shopping Centre have worked very hard to improve
the car park at the centre. When we completed our walk around the car park I was very impressed with the maintenance and cleaning of all the fl oors. I could not see a cobweb anywhere and all the lights were clean and working. I would like to say a big ‘well done’ and the staff should be proud of the work that has gone into the facility’.

Phil Taylor is Safer Parking Scheme development manager for the north east region, but in his spare time he is a swimming coach and chairman of the Borough of Stockton Swimming Scheme – a scheme which provides a performance swimming platform for talented swimming athletes. This year he managed to combine his day job with his sporting passion by promoting the Safer Parking Scheme at an annual swimming pool competition.
Each year the organisation 16 DECEMBER 2010
hosts a swimming gala in the John Charles Olympic- size Leeds swimming pool, attracting swimmers from all over the UK. This year the competition included participants from Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London as well as local swimmers from the north of England. The pool has three car parks, all assessed under the Safer Parking Scheme, and as part of a profi le-raising activity for the scheme Taylor gave competitors and spectators a Safer Parking tax disc holder.
accredited assessor and Mike Bibby, the British Parking Association (BPA) south east development manager carried out the assessment. Bibby said: ‘I am very pleased Maldon District Council has achieved its fi rst Safer Parking Award. It was well deserved and I would like to congratulate all personnel involved. A great deal of eff ort takes place ‘behind the scenes’, which is to the benefi t of all visitors experiencing an enjoyable day out at the park. Promenade Park attracts
more than 300,000 visitors a year and off ers attractions such as an ornamental lake, amphitheatre and open-air stage, which is suitable for
hosting theatrical productions and concerts. T ere is also a splash park water play facility – open from late spring through to the Autumn, and award- winning gardens. T e car park includes
designated disabled parking spaces and a separate coach park and drop-off point. T e parking facilities are spread over a large area – some covered by CCTV with regular patrols by civil enforcement offi cers and park rangers, both of whom are accredited with the ‘Community Safety Accreditation Scheme’ (CSAS) supplied by Essex Police. Bibby added: ‘Management
practices are of a very good standard and meet the requirements of the scheme. T e fact that regular visits are made by the CEOs and park rangers is an obvious bonus whereby assistance can be sought by anyone in diffi culty’.
