SCREENHOUSE 10X10 Campground dinners can be busy enough without having to feed uninvited guests. The Kelty Screenhouse is large enough to en- compass a picnic table so you can cut down on the number of winged invaders at dinner. With ample headroom for anyone that didn’t get a college basketball scholarship, there is little duck- ing required to move around the nine square metres of interior space. Pull-down shades give you options for privacy or shade. At 5.2 kilograms it fits easily in a trunk and with just two alumi- num poles for set-up you won’t have to ask your kids for help. A 13.5 square-metre model is also available.

SALMON RIVER FILLET You can’t blame your kids for asking what that big knife you carry around the campsite is for. “For fish,” you answer. “But that’s what the can opener is for,” they respond, with madden- ing innocence. What you need is a fillet knife that is more eas- ily concealed. Benchmade can help. With an ingenious design they have married a fillet knife with a jackknife to create an 18- centimetre-long blade that folds harmlessly away. A protective sheath extends from the thin handle when you close the knife and retracts out of the way when the knife is open, locking the blade and leaving you free to fillet. With the Salmon River in your pocket, there will be no more questions, but you’ll still be ready for the big one.

ALL-TERRAIN COOLER “I’ll get the cooler,” are words not often heard when the car is being unloaded. You don’t need a bathroom scale to know that a beverage-laden cooler is harder to carry than the beachball. Igloo has just closed the gap a little. With a patented wheel system they have lightened your load by 80 per cent. Two knobby air- filled tires spin on an axle that sits out of the way when the cooler is stationary and swings under the cooler when you want to move it. The tires support 300 pounds each, a limit you might be test- ing at the top end of Igloo’s four-model ATC series. The 156-litre model holds 266 drink cans, but does not come with an engine hoist for getting it out of your trunk, so we recommend the more reasonable 95-litre model.
