Cutting Deals in Adirondacks New York State officials have signed agree- ments with Lyme Timber to open access to more than 100,000 hectares in the Ad- irondacks for recreation. Tough logging will continue on the land, the company has agreed to never sell the land for devel- opment and has allowed new easements which will open up one third of the land to full recreation use. According to Neil Woodworth of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the deal will allow for several hun- dred kilometres of new canoe routes.
Dragon(boat) Slaying Te Fort Langley Canoe Club in B.C. has found the other half of their missing drag- on boat. In April, club members reported that someone had sawn their boat in half and made off with the bow. RCMP in Ridge Meadows located a man at a motel fitting a fibreglass transom on the open end of the hull. He had painted it black and was fit- ting it for a motor for use as a speedboat.
Heroic Doggy Paddling Echo, a shepherd-collie mongrel from Manitoulin Island in Ontario, was hon- oured in May when he was inducted into the Purina Hall of Fame for Pets. Te hall honours pets for feats of brav-
ery that saved lives. Echo earned his place during a canoe trip with his owner last summer. When the pair’s canoe capsized on Lake Huron during a storm, Echo slowly circled his owner and occasionally tucked himself under her arm. Tough land was within swimming distance for Echo, he stayed with his owner for 12 hours until they were rescued. —I.M.
