Superior Speedos

Paddlers on Lake Superior may soon be swapping dry suits for bathing suits. A re- cent study by the University of Minnesota shows surface temperatures on the lake are up 2.5 degrees Celcius (4.5º F) from 1979. Milder winters mean less ice cover and continued warming of lake temperature. Researchers estimate that Superior’s “sum- mer season” is beginning about two weeks earlier than it did 27 years ago. This is good news for cabin feverish kayakers, but bad news for old Gitchee Gumee. A precipitous drop in Superior’s water level this spring is evidence that the lake loses more water to evaporation in a winter without ice cover than it does during the summer.

It Boggles the Mind

Prospective sea kayak guides seeking pro- fessional certification in B.C. have long struggled to choose between a bewildering scrabble-bag of organizations, each profess- ing their own ideology. Now, two of these groups—the Association of Canadian Sea Kayak Guides (ACSKG) and the Cana- dian Federation of Ocean Kayak Educa- tors (CFOKE)—are working to merge their certifications. Says ACSKG President Dave Thoss, “We are talking about running guide exams together…we’d prefer not to compete for guide membership.” Does this hint at the possibility of a single guides’ associa- tion in B.C.? “I do not think we’ll see one guide association in the near future. There are still many differences between the AC- SKG and the SKGABC (Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of BC),” says Thoss. See the orga- nization’s new website at www.acskg.ca.
