Surfing Skookumchuck Rapids Guides Schooled at Tidal Rapids
In April, the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of British Columbia (SKGABC) got bold and held its spring guide exchange at the world’s fastest tidal rapids, Skookumchuck Rapids in Egmont, B.C. Held for profes- sional development every spring and fall, these sessions focus on the sharing of knowledge among professional guides. Skookumchuck was an excellent location for the guides to challenge themselves in moving water, hone their rescue skills and catch a few rides on Skook’s famous monster wave. To find out how they’re go- ing to top that next year, investigate www.

Cowboys Go Kayaking
Calgary is the unlikely headquarters of TRAK kayaks, a new company in the travel kayak market. Frustrated by the sluggish performance of available folding kayaks, TRAK creator Gord Espeseth built a sleek and stylish boat that was easy to transport from his prairie home to more propitious paddling locales. “TRAK was developed for performance—to go fast and keep up with fibreglass boats—rather than strictly for portability like a Feathercraft,” ex- plains Janna Espeseth. The TRAK features a durable polyurethane skin-on-frame de- sign and unique hydraulic components to adjust hull shape on the fly. According to Calum Macdonald of the University of Calgary’s outdoor centre, the TRAK “sets up in half the time of any other folding boat.”

Weekend warriors and devoted expedi- tion paddlers celebrated another success- ful spring race series in southern Florida. WaterTribe, a community of Floridian small boat enthusiasts, hosted the 480 km (300-mile) Everglades Challenge and the 107 km (67-mile) Ultra Marathon. The win- ning kayakers completed the events in 3 days, 21 hours and 12.5 hours, respective- ly. Despite their “race”
